A fine 19th Century oil on canvas painting depicting a stormy harbour scene with fishing boats and rowing boats on choppy seas by prolific maritime artist William Anslow Thornley. The painting is signed lower left by the artist in dark paint and presented within a period gilt wood frame with a glass cover and is ready to hang.
William Anslow Thornley (fl: 1859-1898)
William Anslow Thornley was a painter of coastal scenes who went by several different names: Charles, Hubert and William Anslow Thornley and variations of Thornbery, his actual family name.
He was a prolific painter of high standards whose attractive views of shipping off the English, Dutch and French coasts were exhibited widely during his lifetime.
He exhibited at major London venues including 50 paintings at the Royal Academy (1859-1898), 54 at the Royal Society of British Artists and 4 at the British Institute (1861-1867). Thornley also exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Salon of French Artists, receiving an honourable mention in 1881 and a third place medal in 1888.
CONDITION
Good overall condition commensurate with age, has some light cracking in the light parts of the sky otherwise good.
