This is a very decorative oil painting of Holne Chase and Lovers Leap on the River Dart signed and dated by Lieut. Gen W A Le Mesurier 1873. It depicts a number of figures including two fisherman, a shepherd with his animals and a woman in a pink top, and the composition as a whole has a charmingly naïve quality.

There is a wonderful inscription on the back which reads: "Home Chase (note: this is a misspelling of Holne Chase) with the Lovers Leap, in the River Dart, Devonshire, the property of Sir Boucher Rayes (note: this is a misspelling of Bourchier Wrey). This Landscape Painting is presented to my Beloved Daughter Eliza Matilda Le Mesurier the wife of Major Robert Deane Perry of Clyda nr? Mallow Co of Cork December the 25th 1873, by her father Lieutenant General Wm Am Le Mesurier who painted it in 1873 at the Advanced Age of 87 Years" signed "Wm Le Mesurier Lieut Gen".

Condition: We have had the painting professionally restored, cleaned and re-varnished (with a matt finish) and, as a result, the colours are bright and vivid. The original gilt frame though in poor condition has been touched-up and is serviceable.

Delivery: This can be posted within the UK for £20 or delivered by our trusted delivery person for £45 to most places on Mainland England & Wales. The latter would be preferred as the risk of damage is much lower.
