Late 19th.c. Welsh carved oak armchair c.1880. Of unusual decorative form, the backrest topped with a shaped cresting rail carved with an alliterative Welsh cynghanedd (a one line phrase chosen for the pleasing arrangement of its component sounds) ‘Goreu Gair Gair Duw’ – God’s word is the greatest word. Also featuring turned stiles topped with ball finials, an unusual carved back panel and scrolling arms on turned supports. Over a large board seat with a moulded, shaped and pierced apron raised on turned front legs. Excellent colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
