Watercolour by Bonomi Edward Warren 1894 Romantic Landscape Moonlight %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Bonomi Edward Warren (British, b. c.1842-active 1860-1877) – A Shepherd Attending His Flock by Moonlight

Signed Bonomi E. Warren and dated 1894 (lower left). Watercolour heightened with white and gum arabic on white wove paper.

The shepherd tends to his flock under the glow of the evening moonlight his cottage sits deep within a valley where ‘in the far distance’ a few buildings and a church are nestled in between a forest of trees. The reflection from the moon highlights the stretch of water separating the landscape from the mountains on the horizon. The glow from the moon and the lights from the windows of the cottage add to the romantic feel at the end of a hard day’s work. The location may be imaginary or real but the scene could be from Scotland or Wales.

Bonomi Warren was a watercolourist landscape and figure painter who painted scenes in the countryside in England and Scotland. He exhibited in London at the Royal Academy (A Pollard Oak, Hay’s Common, Kent, 1863, and A Surrey Woodland Scene, 1871) and at the Royal Society of British Artists. His paintings can be highly poetic and romantic, very much in the style of Samuel Palmer.
