Walter Follen Bishop RBA RCamA RBC Oil Beech Woods
We are delighted to offer this superb oil on canvas by the renowned artist Walter Follen Bishop, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a beech wood, possibly Burnham Beeches, in autumn, with the trees waving their bare arms to the sky and the floor of the wood littered with beech leaves and brown fronds of bracken.
Walter Follen Bishop was born in West Derby, Liverpool in the third quarter of 1856. He studied at Liverpool South District School of Art and later at Academie Julian Paris under Bouguereau and Tony Fleury. He was elected a full Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1889 and was also a Member of the Royal Cambrian Academy and of the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists. He was equally at home with watercolours or oils.
He was a much travelled artist and lived variously in London, Liverpool, North Wales, Australia, South Africa and St. Helier in Jersey, where he died on 20th July 1936. In 1925 he travelled on the White Star Line Suevic to Sydney, as well on the White Star Laurentic to Montreal in 1909, and in 1907 he went to New York on the SS America.
He was a prolific artist and exhibited widely, including at the RA 1882-1902, more often at Suffolk Street, but also at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, as well as the Royal Cambrian Academy and the RBA. Titles at the RA include 'In the Heart of the Forest' and A Woodland Pool' etc. In 2007 one of his watercolours (50" x 30") achieved a record price of £18,000 at Christie's.
The painting is newly framed in a 3 1/2" swept, gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang on your wall.
Image size: 29 1/2" x 19 1/2" - 74.95cm x 49.55cm
Frame size: 36 1/2" x 26 1/2" - 92.7cm x 67.3cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
