W. R. Jennings Oil Snowy Landscape Deer 1988
We are delighted to offer for sale this lovely oil on canvas by the artist Walter Robin Jennings, who has signed the painting W. R. Jennings in the lower left hand corner and dated it '88. The frame also bears a brass plaque with the title 'Cotswold Country' W. R. Jennings. The artist has not on this occasion given us the location, however, on a previous painting, now sold, he kindly inscribed the location on the back on the canvas as Enville Estate (Enville is between Stourbridge and Bridgenorth, Nr. Kinver). This painting was executed from a slightly different angle. The painting depicts a herd of deer, trying to forage under the trees, blowing steam from their nostrils, in a very cold and snowy landscape. There is a dry stone wall, with the gate open, crossing the landscape, with a flock of sheep in the next field, mostly under the trees. All the trees are covered with a frosty coating.
There is a companion work to this painting, featuring horses, which we have already listed.
The Enville Estate was a favourite location for works by this artist, as we have handled three others, one in autumn and two in the snow and there was a smaller one sold in Canada of a snow scene with ponies.
Walter Robin Jennings 1927-2005 was born in Dudley, Staffordshire and was an active artist throughout most of his working life. He was a landscape and animal painter, primarily in oil and exhibited widely. His work has been reproduced in card form by Medici, Royle and Solomon & Whitehead. He sadly died in Kiderminster in 2005.
There is one of his paintings in the National Collection and can be viewed at Dudley Museum.
Auction results achieved for works by this artist may be found at artprice.com (50 listings as Walter Robin Jennings and 28 as Walter Robert Jennings), findartinfo.com (23) and arcadja.com (54). Please note that some of these listings may be found under W. R. Jennings or Walter Robert Jennings.
The painting is framed in a 3 3/8" pierced, ornate, swept gilt frame and gilt slip. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and ready to hang. We believe that this painting was framed by the artist, as his name and address label are on the back of the frame.
