W. McGregor Oil/Canvas Loch Leven

1 of 6
We are pleased to offer for sale this very well executed and very large oil on canvas by the artist WILLIAM MCGREGOR, who has signed the painting W. McGregor in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a view of Loch Leven on a sunny day, with blustery clouds in the sky and a man in a rowing boat out on the Loch.
Loch Leven is in Perth and Kinross and is the largest of the lowland lakes. It is now a nature reserve. It was in Loch Leven Castle that Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned.
William McGregor was a Scottish artist in the late 19th/early 20th century. We have found very little biographical information about him in our reference books, although there is a William F. MacGregor who lived in Edinburgh and exhibited in the early 1920s, who may be him, although we cannot find any auction listings for him and his name is spelt slightly differently. Another problem we have had is that most of the auction sites confuse William McGregor with William Yorke MacGregor and show his paintings under this name, although it is obvious from the work that they are totally different and William Yorke MacGregor signed W. J. MacGregor.
The painting was originally sold by an Art Dealer called Ian MacNicol, who had two galleries in Glasgow, which no longer exist. This is shown by the label on the back of the frame, as is the artist's name and the title "Loch Leven".
The painting is offered in its original marbled cream and gilt frame and is ready to hang.
