Victorian Silver Plate Teapot, Philip Ashberry
This is a handsome Victorian Silver Plate Teapot in the Aesthetic Style. The teapot has a circular base with a beaded rim and a hinged lid. The conical body is engraved with ferns and foliage and the cartouches on both sides are blank.
The teapot was made in Sheffield by Philip Ashberry & Sons and dates to around the 1880s/90s, when the Aesthetic style was at the height of its popularity. Philip Ashberry established his firm in Sheffield in 1829, originally as pewter spoon makers. By 1865 the firm had expanded its range of wares and become Philip Ashberry & Sons. They primarily produced electroplated items alongside a small range of Sterling Silver pieces. The firm ceased trading in 1933 and the name and premises were later acquired by Lewis, Rose & Co.
Overall condition is good, with no dents and just some light wear to the plate on the handle and the spout plus the overall superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The hinge on the lid is in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teapot is 18.3cm / 7.2ins from spout to handle, 11.6cm / 4.5ins across at its widest point and stands 18.3cm / 7.2ins high. Capacity is 1.15l / 2pts and it weighs 737g / 26oz.
The underside of the base is stamped Philip Ashberry & Sons and Sheffield and has their Britannia trademark stamp.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
