Victorian Silver Plate Tea & Coffee Set with Kettle
Here we have a good quality Victorian Silver Plate Tea and Coffee Service complete with Spirit Kettle. The bodies of all five pieces are covered in chased scrolling decoration against a textured background with the lids of the teapot, coffee pot and kettle decorated in the same style. The stand of the spirit kettle is oval with four line decorated legs and curving supports for the burner.
The set was made in Birmingham by George Bowen & Sons and dates to around the 1870s to 1890s. The firm was established in Birmingham by Jonas Bowen in around 1840. After his retirement his sons Jonas & George took over but after a short period they split and the two separate companies of George Bowen & Sons and Jonas Bowen & Sons were formed around about 1870. They were both specialist electroplaters and the two companies continued into the 20th century.
The set has certainly seen some use but overall condition is good with no dings or dents. The silver plate has worn away in a few minor places from use and polishing but generally the plating is intact, with the patchiest section being the inside base of the sugar bowl. There is some wear to the ebonising on the handle of the teapot from many years of pouring cups of tea. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spirit kettle & stand is 18cm / 7.1ins from spout to back rim, 15.2cm / 6ins wide across the feet and 30cm / 11.8ins high. The teapot is 22.5cm / 8.8ins from spout to handle, 9cm / 3.5ins across the body and 12cm / 4.7ins high. The coffee pot is 22cm / 8.7ins from spout to handle, 8.3cm / 3.2ins across the body and 21.5cm / 8.5ins high. The cream jug is 13.5cm / 5.3ins from lip to handle, 5.5cm / 2.1ins across the body and 7cm / 2.7ins high. The sugar bowl is 17cm / 6.7ins from handle to handle, 7.5cm / 2.9ins across the body and 8.5cm / 3.3 high. All together the set weighs in at 2.4kg / 84.8oz.
The underside of each piece is stamped with EP for silver plate and A for standard quality plate. They have the G B & S in a shield plus the lion's head trademark for George Bowen & Sons. They also have the crown mark, which shows the set can date no later than 1895 as it became illegal to mark silver plate with a crown in 1896.
Shipping in the UK is £18 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set and the weight and size of the parcel.
