This is a top quality, large Victorian Silver Plate Serving Dish. The dish is oval with beaded rims and a beaded handle. The handle is removable, so the dish can either be used as a single serving dish with a cover or as two open serving dishes.

The serving dish was made in Sheffield by Roberts & Belk for retailer Treacher & Co of Bombay (now Mumbai) and Poona (now Pune) and dates to between the 1870s and 1890s, when Treacher & Co were in business. Roberts & Belk traced its history back to the firm of Furniss, Poles & Turner founded in 1810. William Briggs joined the firm in 1822 and later took Samuel Roberts as a partner. After William Briggs retired in 1863, Charles Belk joined and the firm became Roberts & Belk, the name they retained until they were bought by C.J. Vander in 1961.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after around 130 to 140 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

This serving dish is of a substantial size, measuring 31.2cm / 12.3ins in length, 23.7cm / 9.3ins across and standing 15.5cm / 6.1ins high with the handle in place. It weighs in at a hefty 1.94kg / 68.3oz.

The underside of the base is stamped with the Aladdin's lamp trademark and R & B for Roberts & Belk, S for Sheffield and EP for silver plate. Below this is the retail stamp for Treacher & Co Ltd of Bombay & Poona.
