Victorian Silver Plate Matchbox Cover, c.1890s
This is a nice quality late Victorian Silver Plated Matchbox Cover. The cover has an embossed design of entwined flowers and foliage on both the top and bottom. The cartouches in the centre on each side are blank.
The matchbox cover is made by or for Claydon, Robin & Co and dates to around the 1890s. It has a crown symbol next to the EPNS stamp which was not allowed to be used after 1898. Alfred Claydon & Charles Robin were wholesale suppliers to the retail antique jewellery trade in London and the south of England and were active in the late 19th and early 20th century.
Condition is very good with just slight rubbing to the plate on the high point of each cartouche, probably from spending most of its active life in someone's pocket. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The matchbox holder is 4.2cm / 1.6ins long, 2.7cm / 1in wide and 1.4cm / 0.5ins high. It weighs 8g / 0.28oz.
The marks on the side of the holder are clear to read. They show the EPNS stamp for silver plate with a fleur-de-lys on one side and a crown on the other, both standard symbols of good quality plate. Bellow these is the C.R & Co mark for Claydon, Robin & Co of London.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
