Victorian Silver Plate Hot Water Jug, Mappin Bros.
This is an attractive Victorian Silver Plate Hot Water Jug from the latter part of the 19th century. The Georgian Revival style jug has a part reeded body standing on an oval base, a hinged lid with a reeded dome and an urn shaped finial. The finial and handle are brown bakelite.
The hot water jug was made in Sheffield by Mappin Brothers as part of their Queen's Plate range and dates from around the 1880s/90s. Originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr, in 1859 the firm split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. Mappin Brothers always considered itself the senior of the two companies but was less commercially successful. They were rejoined when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The firm remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Walker & Hall and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is very good, with no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug is 16cm / 6.3ins from lip to handle, 9cm / 3.5ins across and stands 19.8cm / 7.8ins high. It holds 852ml / 1.5pts of water and weighs 529g / 18.6oz.
The underside of the base is stamped with the sun and face trademark and the name Mappin Brothers, their addresses in London & Sheffield and Queen's Plate.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
