Victorian Silver Heart Table Mirror, W Comyns 1894
Here we have a very fine quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Mounted Dressing Table Mirror. The bevelled glass mirror is heart shaped whilst the silver frame has swooping reeded decoration all the way round and an oval blank cartouche in the centre at the top. The backing is wooden with a fabric covering, the strut being plain wood.
The mirror is made in London by celebrated silversmiths William Comyns & Sons and dates to 1894. William Comyns founded his firm in 1859, later being joined by his sons. They produced silverware of the highest quality, often in striking designs. The company passed through several generations of the Comyns family and finally ceased trading in the early 1990s.
Condition of the silver is good with just a few tiny dings in the frame. There is a little foxing to the mirror back but that is only to be expected in a mirror that is nearly 130 years old. The fabric on the inside of the strut is a little ragged but you could replace this if you wished too. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mirror is a good size for a dressing table standing 25.6cm / 10.1ins high and measuring 19.5cm / 7.7ins across the front feet. It extends to 17.5cm / 6.9ins deep with the strut fully open. All in it weighs 704g / 24.8oz.
The hallmarks, at the bottom of the frame, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter T for 1894 and the W.C makers' mark for William Comyns & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mirror.
