Victorian Silver Bread Basket, Elkington & Co 1898
Here we have a top quality Victorian Sterling Silver Bread Basket. The base is quatrefoil shaped from which rise intricately pierced sides to a scroll handle at each end. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind making this ideal as a gift.
The basket is made in London by Elkington & Co and dates to 1898. Founded in Birmingham in 1836, Elkington & Co are one of the greatest names in English silver and their mark is always a guarantee of quality.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced sections and only the most minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bread basket is 25.7cm / 10.1ins long, 14.3cm / 5.6ins wide and stands 6.5cm / 2.5ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 181g / 6.4ozs of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks in the base of the bowl are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter c for 1898 and the E & Co Ld in conjoined circles makers' mark for Elkington & Co. In addition, the underside of the base is stamped with the registered design number 323025, showing that the design also dates to 1898.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the basket.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
