Victorian Silver Albertina Bracelet/Chain c.1880s English Albertina Pocket Watch Chain %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
In General
A beautifully designed, English antique Victorian silver Albertina bracelet, or pocket watch chain, with a decorated ball charm, T-bar and pretty separate tassel charm. There is also a fully working dog clip clasp.  The chain has three central snake chains, divided by two heavier rope chains, with double sided ornate snake design chain ends. At one end, there is an embossed ball charm, culminating in the T-bar and at the other end there is the dog clip clasp. The charming tassel fob, has its original six tassel strands and ball ends. The chain has no silver marks, however we understand that the chain is a mix of continental silver and sterling silver. The chain has its delightful rich antique silver patina and is a good length at 24.5 cm long, with a 2.75 cm long T-bar and a 4 cm long tassel. The chain is English and from the Victorian era and can be dated from circa 1880s.

We believe that this chain has been converted into a bracelet given that the tassel and its chain have been separated from the main chain. The tassel charm should have a tassel chain attached to it, connected to the T-bar. It wears very well as a bracelet and it may be possible to attach the tassel near the T-bar to add more decoration to the piece.

An Albertina chain, is a type of decorative chain, that originated in the Victorian era and is named after Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert. An Albertina chain is the name given to a pocket watch chain worn by Victorian women. These chains, along with longer and heavier Albert chains worn by men - were popular during the Victorian era. The Albertina chains were generally finer than the Albert chains and often were multi-stranded with decorative charms, including tassels and balls such as on this chain.  These chains were generally made of silver or gold or a combination of the two. Albertina chains were more commonly worn as jewellery, such as bracelets or necklaces when the fob watch era ended.
