Victorian Oil On Panel Portrait Major Charles Hall
NB Please note that any tiny white marks on the photos are caused by light hitting varnish on raised paint and are not damage or paint loss.
We are delighted to offer for sale this outstanding portrait oil on 3/8" thick prepared mahogany panel by an unknown artist. The artist has inscribed on the painting in the top right hand corner, which, unfortunately, is impossible to photograph, as it is very faint 'Major Charles Hall ADC Headquarters Staff Eastern Command'. This is also written in pencil on the back of the mahogany panel, as well as a label which reads 'Prepared Panel, Winsor & Newton (Limited) Artists Colourmen to Her Majesty and to T.R.H. The Prince & Princess of Wales, 38 Rathbone Place, W & North London Colour Works, N.W.' As Eastern Command wasn't set up at Colchester until 1866, Edward VII was only Prince of Wales until January, 1901 when his mother died and Winsor & Newton only became a Limited Company in 1881, that dates the painting to the period 1881-1901. We have been reliably informed that the frock coat that he is wearing II of a pattern not in use before 1896.
Major Hall, is wearing a Frock Coat and is holding a Bicorn Hat, with the plume of an ADC or Aide de Camp. He is wearing a heavy cavalry sword, white gloves and is wearing spurs over his black boots. As I have checked every ADC listed for Eastern District Command for this period and he does not appear, it can only be that he was there temporarily at some stage during the year after the list had been published and moved elsewhere before the publication of the next list. The research is ongoing.
This superb portrait has been newly framed in a 4" ornate gilt frame with ivory line and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 14 1/4" x 11" - 36cm x 28cm
Frame size: 22 1/4" x 19" - 56.5cm x 48.25cm
Medium: Oils on mahogany panel
Conditon: Excellent. The surface is clean and there is no craquelure or paint loss. The frame is new.
