A fine oil on canvas landscape of sheep on the hills. The painting is titled on the reverse 'In the gray of the dawning' and the work certainly captures the hazy light of the early morning sunshine. The painting is by Hugh Berry Scott b.1854, he is a little known Lancashire artist, his works are held in local collections, where he seems to have worked purely as a commercial artist, his work has a great impressionist feel about it. The painting is signed bottom left and inscribed on the reverse with the title and the location Lytham. The painting is mounted in a Victorian period gilt frame and the whole is in good condition. The painting has been professionally cleaned and a small hole repaired. The work of Hugh Berry Scott is highly desirable especially in his native Lancashire. C.1890.
