Victorian c. 1865 Oil Canvas Portrait Young Girl
We are offering for sale this lovely portrait oil on canvas of a young girl by an unknown artist. The painting depicts a head and shoulders portrait of a pretty young girl, with fair hair curling to her shoulders and blue eyes. She is wearing a simple white dress that has slipped off one shoulder.
The canvas bears the mark of an artists' colourman by the name of William Eatwell at 49 Dorset Street Portman Square and Baker Street, which dates the painting to between 1855 and 1875. W. Eatwell provide equipment and canvases to some of the best artist of the day, including Frederick, Lord Leighton, Millais and Landseer, as well as many others. Unfortunately, there is no clue as to who executed this work, but it is very well observed. The painting has been through Christie's as their stencil is on the stretcher and we are pursuing this line of enquiry.
The portrait has been newly framed in a 3 5/8 inch ornate silver gilt frame. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
Medium: Oils on original canvas and stretchers
Image size: 15 3/4 x 13 1/4 inches - 40cm x 33.6cm
Frame size: 23 1/2 x 20 7/8 inches - 59.7cm x 53cm
Condition: Very good. There are three small patches to the canvas, but none near the face. There is some craquelure consistent with age, but there is no paint loss and the surface is clean and taut. All stretcher wedges are present. The frame is new.
