Vasco Lazzolo 1914-1984 Oil Portrait of his Wife
We are delighted to offer for sale this large portrait oil by the artist Society Portrait Painter Vasco Lazzolo, who has signed the painting in the top right hand corner. The painting depicts a half length portrait of his wife, wearing a low-cut pale turquoise dress, with her long blonde hair curling onto her shoulders. She has a black ribbon choker around her neck. We know that this is his wife, as it was sold some years ago as a pair with a self-portrait of the artist.
Vasco Lazzolo was born in 1915 and studied at the Liverpool School of Art and the Slade. Prior to WWII, he was a fashion magazine and book cover illustrator illustrator. There is an interesting clip on google of the artist on Pathe News in 1938, giving a television demonstration of his technique when drawing fashion models. He was in his early twenties.
After the war, he became a well known Society Portrait Painter and numbered amongst his many celebrity subjects and friends, Donald Campbell, Somerset Maugham and the Duke of Edinburgh. He was also a sculptor and crafted a bronze head of the Duke of Edinburgh, which is visible on google. He had a large studio in Kensington.
He was also known for his friendship with Stephen Ward of the Profumo affair in the 1960s and had been commissioned by the Maharajah Cooch Behar to paint a portrait of a young model, who sadly died in a car crash. The portrait was completed after her death. There are at least 7 pages of information about Vasco Lazzolo on google and several of his paintings are shown on google images.
We can find little information about his later years, other than that he died in 1984.
There are a few auction results at the usual sites, but, bearing in mind his relative modernity, it is likely that the majority of his portraits are still in private hands.
The portrait is newly framed in an ornate 4" swept gilt frame, which suits it extremely well. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Condition Good condition with overall craquelure present but no paint loss and the paint is stable. The surface is clean and taut. There are stretcher marks consistent with age. The frame is new.
