Rutherford was born in Chelmsford, Essex, England and studied at the Slade School. She became a Red Cross volunteer nurse in WW II and subsequently became an official war artist recording for posterity her experiences. She once said that she could either be a good nurse or a good artist and forsook nursing for painting.
