Trompe l'oeil oil by William J Morley Clayton
An important oil Trompe l'oeil by Nottingham Artist William James Morley Clayton. The oil on board entitled 'letter rack' is worked in the most minute detail that it really is like you could take a postcard from it. The painting is centred around images of the second world war with a newspaper from VE day at the centre around which are postcards and photos all emblematic of the period. The painting is a large work by the artist and was purchased by the last owner from The Royal Academy exhibition in 1979 and interestingly it still has some of the postcards etc with it that the artist used in the work. The painting is in excellent condition and in the original frame.
William James Morley Clayton 1934 to 2006 is a highly regarded still life artist working to a level of realism that is rarely seen, he would collect items to create a story or a theme locally in Nottingham and the works therefore have some much feeling and life about them. His works are extremely desirable, and can be seen in Nottingham City Museum and often go through the great auction houses, this example is extremely fine and large of his works and has wonderful Royal Academy history.
