Tomson Laing Scottish Exh.1890-04 Oil The Smithy
We are offering for sale this delightful view of a rural scene by the Scottish artist TOMSON LAING, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and signed, dated and entitled it in his own on a label verso. The old label is difficult to read, but it appears to say 'Robin Larms? Smiddy, Nile Mile Burn, Near Carlops. Tomson Laing 1907'. We presume that he meant Nine Mile Burn, which is a hamlet on the A702 near Carlops, south west of Edinburgh.
The painting depicts two shire or Clydesdale horses outside the Smithy or Smiddy, with the blacksmith, wearing his leather apron, standing in the doorway with his assistant. There is another heavy horse with his owner astride him, just approaching the Smithy. On the opposite side of the road from the Smithy is a cartwheel and some lumber, which may be outside the joiners in Nine Mile Burn. There is a photograph of this building available on google images.
Tomson Laing, was a Scottish landscape and coastal painter, most of whose paintings contained horses or farm animals. He was a Glasgow based painted who exhibited between 1890 and 1904 at the Glasgow Institute, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Other than this, there appears to be little biographical information available about him.
He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists and the Dictionary of Scottish Painters.
