Titanic Walter Linsley Meegan oil
This is a painting in oils on canvas most probably of the Titanic, but definitely one of the White Star Line ships, the Olympic or the Britannic. The artist is Walter Linsley Meegan (1859-1944). Why would Meegan paint any other ship of the White Star Line other than the Titanic, as (even before the tragedy) it was famous because it symbolised wealth, extravagant tastes and engineering skill?
Meegan was a painter of landscapes and moonlight scenes in oils. He studied at Leeds College of Art and became a pupil of John Atkinson Grimshaw. He painted views of Scarborough, Whitby and docksides. His paintings were sometimes signed ‘Walter Linsley’, his mother’s maiden name.
