Thomas Finchett 1858-1931 Oil Dolwyddelan Castle
We are offering for sale this very well executed oil on canvas by the artist Thomas Finchett, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The artist has also given the location on the stretcher verso as: Dolwyddelan Castle. Birth place of Llewellyn the Great. Near Betwys-y-Coed Painted by Thomas Finchett 15 George Street, Llanrwst, N. Wales. The painting depicts a country road which sweeps around the hill on which is situated the remains of Dolwyddelan Castle in North Wales. Filling the roadway, which has a dry stone wall on each side, is a large flock of sheep, including a ram, and one small brown sheep.
This painting is the companion piece to the other Welsh oil by this artist, depicting Fairy Glen and framed in a matching frame, that we have already listed.
Dolwyddelan Castle (Welsh: Castell Dolwyddelan) is a Welsh castle located near Dolwyddelan in Conwy County Borough in North Wales. It is thought to have been built in the early 13th century by Llywelyn the Great, Prince of Gwynedd and Wales. Though the castle was then only one tower with two floors, a second tower was built in the late 13th century and a third floor was added to the first during the late 15th century repairs.
The Welsh castle, built in the early 13th century, functioned as a guard post along a main route through North Wales. It was reputed to be the birthplace of Llywelyn the Great, though it is now thought that he was born at Tomen Castell, a small tower that previously stood on a nearby hill, and that he built Dolwyddelan Castle.] On 18 January 1283 it was captured by Edward I of England's forces during the final stages of his conquest of Wales. Some historians have suggested that there may have been a deal between the defenders of the castle and Edward I in which its surrender was negotiated. The castle was then modified and strengthened until at least 1286 for occupation by an English garrison with recorded repairs including carpentry, the bridge, and the water mill.
Edwardian troops maintained a military presence here until 1290. As the long-term strategy of control in Wales began to rely on military and administrative centres accessible by sea, the inland castles became obsolete.
In the 15th century, the upper storey and drainage system were added to the keep by local lord Maredudd ap Ieuan who acquired the lease in 1488. It was restored and partly re-modelled in the 19th century by Lord Willoughby de Eresby, who added the distinctive battlements. It was reported that in around 1810 one of the towers may have collapsed.
In 1930 the building was placed under the guardianship of the Ministry of Works. The castle is now under the protection of Cadw, which is part of the Welsh Assembly's historic environment division.
Thomas Finchett was born in December 1858 in Great Boughton, Cheshire, the son of a grocer. He studied at Manchester School of Art and, in 1882 was awarded a Queens Prize for one of his watercolours. Strangely, this was a year after his marriage to Sarah Ann Harrison in St. Oswald's in Chester, which took place on 4th July 1881.
By 1891, he was living at No 7, Salisbury Terrace, Llanrwst, Denbighshire, Wales with his wife Sarah, who is listed in the Census as a dressmaker, two daughters, 2 sons and a servant. The family lived in Llanrwst at the same address until after the 1911 Census and possibly until the death of Thomas in June 1931, as he died in Llanrwst.
It would appear that Thomas didn't exhibit his work, as he is not listed in any of our reference books, as they draw their information from major exhibitions. However in recent years his work regularly appears on the market and the main auction results sites list his work.
The painting is listed in its original 3 3/8" faux walnut lacquerwork wooden frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 23 1/4" x 17 1/4" - 59.1cm x 43.8cm
Frame size: 29 3/4" x 23 2/4" - 75.55cm x 60.35cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: Very good for its age. The painted has been lightly cleaned and revarnished. There are no repairs to the canvas, as shown but this is some craquelure and slight stretcher marks consistent with age. There is one small, round, bumpy section to the canvas to the left hand sky area, the cause of which we do not know, as it does not appear to be a repair. The frame is in very good condition.
