The Maharajah's nautch by Archibald Herman Muller
Archibald Herman Muller (1878-1952) was the son of a German Protestant from Cochin and an Indian Catholic mother. Muller graduated at the Madras School of Art where he was highly regarded by his teachers. He moved to Bombay in 1910 and won the prestigious Bombay Art Society's top award in painting with his 'Princess Giving Gift to a Brahmin Boy', a work inspired by Ravi Varma's famous painting celebrating the theme of charity.
His important history paintings include 'Ganga's decent into Patala', 'Sakuntala at Dusyanta's Court', 'The prediction of Prince Siddharta', 'Krisna and Arjuna at Kuruksetra', 'Draupadi's Vastraharan', 'Ulipi and Arjuna' and 'Usa's Dream'.
During 1922 Muller was working for the Maharaja of Bikaner, who had commissioned him to record his hunting trips. He soon returned to Bombay as he felt he needed more time for his large figure paintings. He won a further Bombay Art Society award in 1928, and finally returned to Rajasthan as the state artist of Jodhpur.
