The Herring Fleet, Henry MARTIN
The Herring Fleet
Henry Martin (1836 - 1908)
Oil Painting
LOT NOTES
A wonderfully executed oil of the once prodigious Cornish herring fleet fishing off the coast. This Martin oil is typical of his style, a detailed portrayal of the subject, showing his knowledge of both the landscape and coast and the technical detail of the herring smacks.
AUCTION RECORD
£2000.00
CONDITION
In excellent condition and framed to complement the picture.
ARTIST INFORMATION
(John) Henry Martin was based in Newlyn before it became an artists' colony and he is not one of the 'Newlyn School', as he did not share the later group's ethos and painting style. Although he visited Newlyn after 1880, it seems that the arrival of the Newlyn group from 1882 somehow coincided with his move away from the area. His charming pictures are valuable records of West Cornwall in the 1870s.
Martin’s work is mainly of small scale. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1874, and continued to exhibit widely until about 1895, with works also shown at the Royal Society of British Artists, The Grosvenor Gallery, London, and the Walker Gallery, Liverpool among others. Although he visited Newlyn after 1880, it seems that the arrival of the Newlyn group from 1882 somehow coincided with his move away from the area.
Also known for his views of Plymouth and the River Tamar, Martin died and was buried in Saltash in 1908.

ITEM INFORMATION & TERMINOLOGY
Every item we sell is fully guaranteed to be as we describe. We use the same cataloguing terms as most major auction houses The cataloguing terms that we use have the following meanings
1. where the text which forms reads "'by" and is followed by the artist's full name (or the artist's initials, if his full name is unrecorded), the work is in our opinion by the artist
2. where the expression "attributed to" is used, the work is in our opinion possibly a work by the artist, in whole or in part
3. where the expression "'circle of'" is used, the work is in our opinion a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence
4. where the expression "'follower of"' is used, the work is in our opinion a work executed in the artist's style but not necessarily by a pupil
5. where the expression '"manner of"' is used, the work is in our opinion a work executed in the artist's style but of a later date
6. where the term "after" is used, the work is in our opinion a copy or pastiche (of any date) of a work by the artist.
7. Where the term 'signed...' is used in our opinion the work has been signed by the artist, where the term 'with signature...' or 'bears signature...' is used in our opinion the signature is by a hand other than that of the artist.
