The Gleaners After Jean-François Millet
The Gleaners - Jean-François Millet Oil on board
'Barbizon school'
Sadly not the original(!), which is displayed within the Musée d'Orsay Paris.
Much is written about this wonderful piece of realism. Our rendition, after the original does capture some of what Millet saying. The way that the faces of the three peasant woman do not meet the viewer is purposeful. The isolation of the woman, being peasants is defined by the barren land between the higher valued labourers in the back ground.
Though today this work is regarded as Millets finest, back in 1857 when the work was completed it was rejected by the middle and the upper classes.
At it's opening exhibition Millet was forced to accept a mere third of his asking price. The work was ridiculed. It was neither portrait or landscape and regarded as a waste, a particularly large canvas merely showing three peasant woman.
It was only after Millets death in 1875 that the piece was appreciated. It was sold at auction for 300.000 Francs, the buyer being found to be Champagne maker Jeanne-Alexandrine Louise Pommery had acquired the piece. It was subsequently donated to The Louvre and since been displayed at the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
Gleaning is the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers' fields after they have been commercially harvested or on fields where it is not economically profitable to harvest. It is a practice described in the Hebrew Bible that became a legally enforced entitlement of the poor in a number of Christian kingdoms.
