Sydney Herbert 1843-1914 Oil Amsterdam 1896
We are pleased to offer for sale this very well executed sunset view of one of the canals of Amsterdam by the well known Cheltenham artist Sydney Herbert. The oil painting was executed on George Rowney's Academy Board. The painting depicts a wide canal in Amsterdam, with the spire of one of their many churches towering above the buildings which border the canal to the right, one of which has a shop in its ground floor. Most of the tall buildings have a beam in their top storey to enable items to be hauled up and in through windows. To the left of the canal there are some trees and a bridge crosses the canal. In the left foreground are a couple of dutch sailing barges and there are some small barges being rowed along the canal. Sydney Herbert signed the painting to the lower right hand corner, entitled it Amsterdam verso and dated it 1896.
Sydney Herbert was born Joseph George Sydney on the 8th Octoberr 1843, to Joseph an ornamental painter and his wife Elizabeth, of Dudley, Worcestershire. His professional name as an artist was Sydney Herbert. In the Census of 1861, he was listed as a painter and, in the 1971 Census, he was listed as an artist, still living in Dudley with his parents with his wife Jessie (nee Smith) (1850-1937), who had married in 1870 and their baby daughter Theresa Mary.
By 1881, they had moved to Cheltenham and were living at Carlton Lodge, Carlton Street, where they lived until 1914. They had acquired a son Aubrey Vernon, who was born in 1877. Both children died young, his daughter in 1899 and his son in 1916 of ill health.
Sydney first exhibited an oil Sunset, Conway Bay at Suffolk Street in 1865 and last exhibited in 1899. There are 5 of his paintings in the National Collection, including A Dream of Ancient Athens at Leeds AG, Storm Over Lemnos Greece at Worcester City AG, Dudley Castle at Dudley Museum, San Giorgio, Venice at the Harris Museum & AG and another architectural study in Cheltenham.
Sydney Herbert spent 23 years of his life up until 1908, as Art Master at Cheltenham Ladies College, after which he gave private lessons as well as painting his own works. He travelled to Europe on painting holidays and, on his return produced many paintings of the countries he visited. We found a notation that he had returned from Holland in 1896 and exhibited some paintings at the Cheltenham Fine Art Society exhibition that year. This fact ties up nicely with the fact that written in pencil on the back of the board, is an address in Cheltenham, which may have been that of the original purchaser of this work. We know he visited Switzerland in 1898, Sicily in 1909, Mainland Italy including Venice and probably France.
He was Secretary of the Fine Art Society in Cheltenham for many years and exhibited at their annual exhibition every year. He also gave lectures on art appreciation, Egyptology, biblical architecture etc. He wrote frequently for the local Cheltenham Onlooker on various subjects, including a critique of the current exhibition entries.
He was a Member of the Society of Biblical Archaeology and many of his larger works lend their subject matter to his historical imagination, see the titles above. He also painted landscapes and townscapes in oils, some coastal views and watercolours. He had a habit of including drawings in his letters and was a very well read studious man with many classical interests. He was the Designer of the Gloucestershire Pageant in 2008, which took place in Pittville Park and was a massive undertaking. He designed scenery and costumes for the Ladies College.
Sadly, when returning from a sketching trip just outside Cheltenham on 22nd April 1914, he fell ill on a tramcar and, although the tram headed for a nearby Doctor's house, on meeting a different Doctor in his car, they stopped him, but by the time they attended to him, he had died. According to the inquest, it was determined that he had suffered a heart attack at the age of 67, although he was actually 70. It is often listed on auction sites that he was born in 1854, but that is erroneous, as if that were the case, he would have exhibited in Suffolk Street at the age of 11.
The painting has been newly framed in an ornate silver grey frame. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
Image size: 16 5/8 x 11 1/2 inches - 42.2cm x 29.2cm
Frame size: 22 3/4 x 17 5/8 inches - 57.7cm x 44.7cm
Medium: Oils on Academy Board
Condition: Very good. The surface is clean and there is no craquelure. There are two tiny creases in the lower right corner. The frame is new.
