A superb folk art Shire horse oil painting. The work of a typically naïve style shows a chestnut Shire horse in stable setting. The painting is in good condition with some areas of overpaint and old repair. The overpaint is much more visible in the photos than in reality. The work is signed and dated to the lower left ‘M.Atkinson 1901’. The artist will have been a local amateur or itinerant artist specialising in portraying prize livestock. The painting is framed in a period gilt frame that is in very good condition. The whole is a superb example of naïve folk art animal portraiture and a rare example of a Shire horse.
