Superb 19th C. Oil Portrait Elderly Bearded Man
We are pleased to offer for sale this superb Portrait Oil Painting on Canvas of an elderly man. The portrait bears a very indistinct signature to the lower left hand corner, which has proved impossible to read even when photographed, although one of the words appears to start with a capital G..
This is an expert character study of an elderly man with a kindly but slightly sad face, whose head is resting on his right hand, while his left is gripping the curved handle of a wooden walking stick. He is wearing a dark brown, double breasted coat with black collar and has long greying hair and a long matching beard and moustache. His years of life experience are etched into the lines on his face and, as there is little in the way of background to the portrait his features stand out hauntingly from the canvas.
The portrait is framed in what may very well be its original, 3" ornate gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang. There is a portion of a label on the stretcher, which simply reads 'ADVANCED SECTION' but we do not know if this is relevant to an exhibition or something else.
Image size: 23 3/4" x 19 3/8" - 60.3cm xm 49.25cm
Frame size: 29 3/4" x 25" - 75.55cm x 63.5cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: The canvas has been relined in the fairly recent past and now is in good clean condition with no craquelure and only slight stretcher marks. The frame is in very good condition consistent with its age.
