Stunning Italian shell Cameo in 14ct gold frame.
This stunning quality shell cameo depicts Amphirite, the Greek goddess of the sea. Probably made in Italy in the town of Torre del Greco, near Naples, during the first half of the 19th century.
In ancient Greek mythology, Amphitrite was the goddess of the sea and the queen of the sea, and her consort is Poseidon. She was a daughter of Nereus and Doris (or Oceanus and Tethys). Under the influence of the Olympian pantheon, she became the consort of Poseidon and was later used as a symbolic representation of the sea.
This is a Victorian cameo and Amphitrite is seen above the waterline riding a dolphin, with cupids around her signifying love, under the waterline are three mermaids.
This shell cameo is exceptionally well carved with attention to quality and detail. The carving is deep giving a rounded appearance. It has a 14 carat gold frame (both marked and tested) and can be worn as either a brooch or a pendant.
The shell is 6.0 centimeters by 4.5 centimeters. Including the frame the brooch measures 7.5 centimeters by 6.0 centimeters. The gross weight is 27 grams.
The condition is excellent with no problems at all.
UK Special Delivery post is £10.00.
