Stuart H.Bell Oil Painting Dtd.1868 Moonlit Thames Stuart H Bell 1823-1896 Oil Painting %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are offering this tranquil moonlight oil on canvas, by the northern artist Stuart Henry Bell, who has signed the painting Stuart H.Bell in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1868. He has entitled the painting verso on the back of the canvas 'A Calm on the Thames' and signed and dated it again.

The painting depicts a moonlit night on the Thames, with the moon partially hidden by the clouds and being reflected in the waters of the River. There is a large three-masted naval ship moored to the right, with light emanating from its gun ports and reflecting in the water, as well as a smaller sailing ship further away to its right. On the left of the painting is a Thames hay barge, with two crew visible on its deck, possibly shipping its sails and, in the near left foreground and depicted in great detail, is a rowing boat with two men aboard.

Stuart Henry Bell was born in Newcastle in 1823. He started work as a scenery backdrop painter at an early age, working at many metropolitan and provincial theatres and was renowned for his marine backdrops. He later became a professional artist, primarily of marines and his marine paintings were particularly admired by Queen Victoria. He exhibited primarily in Newcastle and the surrounding area and scenes of Sunderland harbour became one of his favourite subjects.

There are 17 of his paintings in the National Collection which may be viewed on BBC - Your Paintings and they are as follows-

6 at the Wilberforce House Museum in Hull
10 at Sunderland Museum
1 at the Usher Gallery in Lincolnshire.

His biographical details are listed in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and British 19th C. Marine Painting.

On a personal note he married Martha Reynolds in 1862 and they had no children, as he is listed in the 1871 Census as living at 20 Peel Street Bishopswearmouth (now part of Sunderland) with his wife only and his occupation is given as Marine Artist. By 1881, they are still living at the same address, but as well as Artist for his occupation, he also lists Music Hall Proprietor. He apparently married again in 1893 after Martha's death in 1890.

Regarding his theatrical ventures, he leased the Theatre Royal in Newcastle and the Drury Lane in Sunderland for his Music Hall shows, where he painted all the backdrops and was known for his sensational scene effects. There are over 850 newspaper articles regarding these shows, but, unfortunately, his theatrical aspirations ended in bankruptcy. He died in 1896.

His work only rarely comes to the market, but his auction results are available at the usual sites.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3 3/8" silver gilt frame to suit and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
