Silver Waltham pocket watch and chain with history
Antique silver Waltham pocket watch and chain.
The watch has a seven jewel stem-winding movement, Traveler grade, which is working nicely. The movement is fully signed and the serial number, 12,280,516, dates it back to 1903. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover upon which a previous owner has scratched the names Edie Walshaw & Chas R Darnes.
Edith Walshaw, listed as a cotton reeler, and Charles Darnes, a joiner, were married in Halifax in 1912.
The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are Swiss hallmarks for 935 silver inside both of the case backs. The case has engine turned detail to the back, together with a central vacant cartouche. Overall the case is in good condition with just the odd minor mark.
The lens is glass, it has general small marks across the main face and a little nibbling to the bevelled edge but overall acceptable for a piece of its age.
The dial has blued steel hands (some of the finish has come off the minute hand), a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers. There are three or four short faint hairline cracks towards the edge of the dial.
The watch comes with a single silver chain with graduated links. Also included is a later 1937 silver running fob.
The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.
ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
Please contact us before placing international orders so that we can advise of shipping prices and to see if customs regulations allow us to post watches to your country.
The international buyer is responsible for paying any import duties and taxes.
All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.
We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.
Credit / debit card purchases can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the \'Buy Securely\' button on each listing page.
We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
