Silver Plated Sewing Bird or Sewing Clamp
For sale we have a bit of a rarity, a beautiful high quality silver plated sewing bird probably dating to the mid to late 19th century.
The sewing bird has an interesting beautifully, simple elegant, stylized form and consists of a pincushion, a head with a long beak that has machined grips for holding fabric or cotton along with a lovely elegant tail, a G clamp for clamping the sewing bird to a table, an attractive thumb screw grip, and a thumb screw terminating in a knurled brass clamp plate. There are tool marks/file marks around the base of the thumb screw grip and around the inside of the G clamp. The sewing bird seems to be made from silver plated brass. There is some brassing to the pincushion holder and extreme edges of the beak. The pin cushion fabric looks original and shows wear commensurate with its age. The steel spring is strong and in a good condition.
The sewing bird is just over 6 & 1/2 inches high with the thumb screw fully wound out and the pincushion holder has a maximum diameter of approximately 1 & 2/8 inches.
