Silver Plate Wine Decanter Or Claret Jug.
A wonderful silver plate and cut glass wine decanter made by Elkington and Co. in the mid 19th century.
The opening and closing mechanism is operated by pressing the sprung handle, which lifts the glass stopper on or off, the neck of the decanter. This is known as Stockers Patent, which is marked on the rim. I have never seen this method of opening and closing the lid before. The lid can be opened manually without using the handle, which is very convenient for cleaning and drying the decanter.
On the silver plate ring around the neck is marked Elkington & Co. Fect (made by).
The handle is engraved and the lid has fruiting vines upon it, with base having a star cut.
The condition is very good. No chips or nicks to the glass and only a small bit of clouding in the base. The silver plate is also in good, but used, condition.
From the base to the top it measures 28cms.
Elkingtons was founded by George Richards Elkington and his cousin, Henry Elkington, in the 1830s. It operated under the name G. R. Elkington & Co. until 1842, when a third partner, Josiah Mason, joined the firm. It operated as Elkington, Mason, & Co. until 1861, when the partnership with Mason was terminated. The firm operated independently as Elkington & Co. from 1861 until 1963.
The price of £225 includes UK post and packaging.
