Silver Plate 3 Pce Tea Set, Boardman, Glossop & Co
This is a good quality late 19th or early 20th century Silver Plate 3 Piece Tea Set. The set comprises a teapot, a cream jug and a sugar bowl. All the pieces are circular and stand on four hoof feet. The bodies are bulbous with a line decorated top rim.
The set was made in Sheffield by Boardman, Glossop & Co and dates to between around 1890 and 1920. Initially founded by Charles Boardman as silversmiths in 1844, by 1850 they had almost entirely switched to electroplating. A.O. Glossop joined the firm as partner around 1860 and they became Boardman, Glossop & Co in 1887. They manufactured in Sheffield and had a showroom in London's Holborn district. The business was finally bought out in 1924 by Frank Cobb & Co.
Overall condition is very good with no dings or dents. There is a little rubbing to the silver plate on the underside of the cream jug around the makers' mark and some wear to the inside of the teapot as is commonplace in a teapot of this age which has regularly been stirred. There is a crack in the finial of the teapot but it remains secure. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teapot is 25.7cm / 10.1ins from spout to handle, 12.5cm / 4.9ins across the body and 13.7cm / 5.4ins high. The cream jug is 12.5cm / 4.9ins from lip to handle, 9cm / 3.5ins across the body and 6.7cm / 2.6ins high. The sugar bowl is 14cm / 5.5ins from handle to handle, 10.7cm / 4.2ins across the body and 7.4cm / 2.9ins high. All together the set weighs in at 1.12kg / 39.4oz.
All the pieces are stamped on the undersides of the bases with EP for silver plate, B & G for Boardman, Glossop & Co, Hard Soldered to show they are good quality and the product no 10934, which shows they were always a set.
