Sidney Watts Fl.1890-1910 Oil Rural Scene
This is a lovely pastoral oil on canvas by the artist SIDNEY WATTS, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a calm rural scene in summer , with a herdsman herding his cattle, probably back to the farm for milking. There is a clover filled meadow with a patch of sorrel in the foreground and, to the right before the woods, there is a plough. There are low hills in the background with a couple of white farmhouses and some outbuildings.
Sidney Watts does not seem to have exhibited his work, as we cannot find him in our main reference books, however he is listed in Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents'. It says that Sidney Watts was a painter in oil and watercolour of rural landscapes and some Scottish lochs, who was working around the 1900s. He suggests that, due to the similarity of subject and style with a number of other artists, that this may be a pseudonym.
The painting is framed in what may be its original, 3 1/4" ornate, swept frame. It is ready to hang.
