Sheraton Revival Edwardian Mahogany Elbow Chair
A fine elegant Sheraton revival Edwardian solid mahogany elbow chair c1905. Central fluted vase-shaped splat with wheatsheaf and stylised acanthus carved decoration flanked by two vertical fine moulded splats and moulded back-frame. Characteristic Sheraton stepped-arched cresting rail. Shaped arms with curved arm supports, both with carved mouldings ensuite with back rails. Drop-in upholstered seat and solid mahogany seat rails with ovolo outer-edge detail. Supported by square tapered front legs with continued ovolo outer-edge detail. Solid mahogany stretchers. Height to top of back-rail is 95 cm. Maximum width 55 cm. Height to top of seat is 46 cm, depth of seat 42 cm.
The chair is in excellent condition commensurate with age – excepting upholstery. All solid mahogany frames are sound and all joints solid. The chair retains its original finish. Current upholstery on its drop-in seat is serviceable but would benefit from being re-upholstered. We offer the option to purchase the chair as it is or for a small additional cost, we can re-upholster its seat in your choice of fabric. This design of chair back is illustrated in “Sheraton Furniture” by Ralph Fastnedge (p138 plate 10). Based on a Hepplewhite design of 1787 appearing in “The Guide” and Sheraton’s appendix of 1794 3rd edition of “The Drawing Book”. Original is part of the V&A collection.
