Sheila Robinson 1960's British Modern Cat Print
SHEILA ROBINSON (British, 1925 - 1988)
'Catherine'
Original Limited Edition Lithograph
Signed, dated, titled and numbered in pencil.
A superb, highly decorative and large-scale print from one the best mid-century exponents of the cardboard and lino cut print-making process, Sheila Robinson.
'Catherine' depicts a tortoiseshell cat in profile and set against a bright backdrop of scrolling foliage. This somewhat optimistic and joyful image possesses a great sense of detail, yet this work, and the process by which it was made, is as much about what is left out as is what is shown/rendered.
A subject for which Robinson held great reverence, the Cat features throughout a long career which saw her develop her skills as a print-maker to the greatest and fullest degree, with the graphic qualities the medium offered fitting well with her undoubted and inherent sense of design.
Robinson studied at the Royal College of Art, where she came into contact with the influential Edward Bawden and later married the prolific artist, Bernard Cheese. She went on to undertake book illustration and then regular work for the Post Office and BBC, before becoming a full-time lecturer in illustration at the Royal College of Art.
This print is a very original example, fully signed and titled in pencil and numbered 8/50 and dated 1965. The print is set within the original frame from the period, with the backing board bearing an old inventory / sales ticket and a vintage framers label for 'Batoni' of Sloane Street, Belgravia.
Of strong interest to cat lovers as well as to collectors of artists working during the 'golden age' of the 'Modern British' art movement, this piece is highly recommended.
