Seventeenth Century Welsh oak hall chair 2
I have a number of very good Welsh seventeenth century / early eighteenth century chairs and a drop leaf table from the same period listed this week. Do check out my other listings.
This is a very good chair. It is made in oak and dates to the end of the seventeenth Century, anywhere from 1690 to 1710. The chair is Welsh. Welsh antique furniture from this period was superior to anything else being produced in the country. The chair is similar to examples illustrated in Richard Bebb's book on Welsh period antique furniture. The heart motif in the top rail is a particular Welsh device.
The chair is made in very tight grained oak that you find in slow growing hillside oaks. The patina of age in this chair is beautiful. The photos do not do it justice. The chair has a tall back with a shaped apron below. The later is also typical of welsh adornment. It has a fielded panel to the seat. The legs are turned and blocked and the front stretcher is turned and knopped. The joints are dowelled.
The chair is beautiful. It will look wonderful in a period setting or hallway.
The chair is in wonderful condition. Old worm in feet as you would expect. Long since dead. It may be that a seat top is a very old replacement? This is a very good piece.
The back is 46 inches high and the seat is 18 inches high and it is 18 inches wide.
