Set of three Pugin Gothic Altar or Hall Chairs ANTIQUE HALL CHAIRS Gillows Pugin %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A super set of three Pugin style Gothic Revival church altar or celebrant’s chairs in oak and of curule form from the Priory of St. Scholastica, Atherstone and St Mary’s Abbey, Colwich. Comprising an armchair and two side chairs with well carved Gothic tracery, floral motifs and chamfered angles, these would be ideal for use as hall or side chairs. In very good condition with superb quality carvings and comfortable padded seats of standard height, the armchair has been recently reupholstered in red leather whilst the side chairs still have a red rexine/imitation grained leather.

The Priory of St. Scholastica, Atherstone was built in 1837-41 by Joseph Hansom an architect working mainly in the Gothic Revival style, it was acquired in 1857 by Benedictine nuns as a daughter house to Colwich’s St Benedict’s Priory (later St Mary’s Abbey) which they had bought in c.1835. Whilst St Benedict’s Priory had originally been built as a house a program to rebuild it in the Gothic style began after it was purchased in 1828 by Robert Shirley, Viscount Tamworth. Sadly he passed away and after it lying empty it was bought by the Benedictine nuns. Today the building is of considerable architectural interest as an example of early 19th century Gothic architecture whilst St Scholastica is also of interest due its documented work conducted by the Pugin family. In 1967 St Scholastica was closed and the furnishings were brought back to St Mary’s Abbey.
