Set of Three Antique Glass Pharmacy Carboys
Set of Three Antique Glass Pharmacy Carboys.
These three large, impressive 19th century antique carboys have spent their lives displayed in a Chemists shop window in Herefordshire.
Each shapely antique carboy has the original glass top and all are in perfect condition.
Dating from the late 19th century, these carboys were used in times of illiteracy as symbols so people could recognize that it was a pharmacy rather than an apothecary, whose symbol was a pestle and mortar.
If a single carboy was filled with red liquid, this indicated that the plague was present and the village was under quarantine.
A fascinating history of Victorian pharmacies, please see our blog for more details.
This superb, decorative set of antique pharmacy glass carboys are now in Miles Griffiths antiques showrooms.
