Set of Six Wheelback Windsor chairs

A charming harlequin set of six Thames Valley wheelback Windsor armchairs, dating to around 1850, crafted in a variety of native English woods including elm, ash, beech and fruitwood. This attractive group perfectly captures the character and craftsmanship of traditional English country furniture.
Each chair features the classic wheelback splat, framed by elegant turned spindles and a shaped central splat incorporating the distinctive wheel motif. The backs are gracefully bowed, providing both comfort and visual balance, while the gently curved arms are supported by shaped arm supports.
The seats are beautifully figured solid elm, showing wonderful natural grain and colour variation that has developed over many years of use. The chairs stand on turned legs joined by traditional stretchers, giving strength and stability while maintaining the light, elegant form typical of Windsor chair construction.
As a harlequin set, the chairs show slight variations in colour and tone due to the use of different woods, which only enhances their rustic charm and authenticity. The surfaces display a lovely warm, mellow patina developed through age and use.
Both practical and decorative, this set would work wonderfully around a farmhouse dining table, in a kitchen, or as occasional seating in a traditional country interior.
circa 1850
