Set of 4 x R Ackermann Engravings, Shooting, 1823
A complete original set of four Ackermann published prints from paintings by D Wolstenholme and engraved by T. Sutherland. Published in 1823, the subject of all four is the sport of game bird shooting. The main title of each is 'Shooting', plate 1 is " Going Out" plate 2 "Game Found" plate 3 "Dogs Brought the Game and Reloading"plate 4 "Refreshing".
A set of coloured engravings that depict the English gentleman's country lifestyle of the Georgian period.
The whole set is in great condition, there are no rips nor tears to the paper and no water damage. The paper has the expected age colouration, but overall the coloured images are in fine order, strong and unfaded. The frames are not period but are vintage gesso over wood with antique gold coloured finish. The pictures haven't been touched, nor restored in any way, however we have cleaned the frames and glass as well as replace the mounts with a more appropriate antique gold board. There are minor losses to the frames gesso finish, but they aren't drastic.
The 'image only' size is 33cm by 25.1cm, the area inside the mount 36 cm wide by 30cm high , the frame has an overall size of 19 inches by 17 inches.
The painting was by D Wostenholme, the engraving by T Sutherland and the publication by R Ackermann at 101 The Strand London.
Dean WOLSTENHOLME 1 is the artist attributed to these images by the British Museum which also holds a copy of the Ackermann print in its collection. There were two Wostenholmes, (father and Son) both talented sporting artists who earned a reputation as skilled animal painters. Both father and son exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and garnered countless commissions from eager enthusiasts. They specialized in fine hunting scenes and had a natural flare for depicting movement, which lends their work an animation and life, which is truly compelling. This set of four shooting prints is rarely found complete, and is a wonderful example of English sporting art at its best. Buchanan and Laing Galleries are a private client business. Appointments can be made by arrangement via email.
The Company is a distance selling business and as such abides by all current HM Government consumer regulations that apply to pre-owned, second hand, antique items sold online.
