This is probably the finest piece of carved scrimshaw I have owned. A finely carved piece of horn with chip carved lid, whale bone handle and original cork bung. The main body has chip carved and scratch decoration, featuring a range of floral designs, a whaling ship and men harpooning a whale. Above is a motto 'Never give up' and the reverse shows a range of Union flags, a Royal crest and an All Seeing Eye. Some details are picked out in red and blue, the bottom appears to be a dark piece of ebony rather than baleen. English, early to mid 19th century. 11 cm high to top of handle.
