Scottish still life oil painting by Anne D Muir
A fine and charming oil on canvas floral still life painting by Anne Davidson Muir (1875–1951). The work is title on the reverse: ‘Anemones and Love-in-the-mist’ with the flowers being arranged in a blue and white vase. The technique is very detailed and confident with a lovely use of colour. The work is in good untouched condition and retains the Paisley Art Institute exhibition label on the reverse. The frame is the original and of a fine quality with a bronzed finish. The painting is signed to the lower right: ‘Anne D Muir’.
Anne Davidson Muir (1875-1951) was a painter of flowers and portraits, born in Hawick, Roxburghshire. She was educated at George Watson’s Ladies College, Edinburgh, and later studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and Heriot-Watt College Art School, her teachers including John Campbell Mitchell and James Riddel. She exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy, and elsewhere. Muir joined the Glasgow Society of Lady Artists in 1901 winning its Lauder Award in 1923. Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Glasgow, holds her work.
The painting is a fine example of this highly regarded flower painters work in great original condition. C.1920.
