ABOUT THE ARTIST
WILLIAM CARTER RBA, RP (1863-1939). Born in Swaffham, Norfolk and brother of the famous Egyptologist Howard Carter, who discovered of Tutankhamun's tomb.

William studied at the Royal Academy, winning many awards. He exhibited 40 times at the RA, and at the RHA, SBA, GG, NWG, RP and abroad. Elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1884, and Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1915. He had a very successful society portrait practice. He lived at Swaffham and at London.

BROTHER HOWARD CARTER
Howard Carter was born on May 9, 1874, in Kensington, London. His father Samuel Carter was a successful artist. Howard was a sickly child, and was sent to live with his aunts in Norfolk. He had private home schooling, and had an artistic streak from an early age. When his father painted a portrait of a well-known Egyptologist, the young Howard's interest was sparked.
Howard Carter first went to Egypt in 1891 as a young 17 year old artist hired to sketch.
In 1907, Carter was hired by wealthy English aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who was fascinated by Egyptology. With Carnarvon's backing, Carter led the excavation of Egyptian nobles' tombs. In 1914, Carnarvon received a license to dig at a site where it was believed the tomb of King Tutankhamun rested and discovered the chamber in 1922.On Feb 16th. 1923, Carter opened the innermost chamber and found the sarcophagus of King Tut.

ABOUT THE SITTER [ Officer Scots Guards ]
LIEUTENANT MAXIMILIAN DUDLEY DIGGES DALISON (1852-1885), married Charlotte Grace Beresford-Peirse, daughter of Henry William de la Poer Beresford-Peirse and Henrietta Anne Theodosia Monson on 8 October 1874. They had two children.
Dalison was commissioned lieutenant in 1871 in the Scots Guards, 2nd Battalion. He fought in the Suakin Expedition in the Sudan.
He was killed in action, aged 33, at the Battle of Hasheen on the 20th March 1885, shot through the heart.
He was awarded The Egypt Medal. Buried at Suakin his memorial is at St. Hybalds, Hibaldstow, Lincolnshire.

POEM IN MEMORIAM
Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895) who wrote "All Things Bright and Beautiful", "There is a Green Hill Far Away" and the Christmas carol "Once in Royal David's City" was sufficiently moved by Dalison's death to write a poem "In Memoriam", which begins "Beneath the grey Egyptian sands, Where the red sun burns out the green, Here lies, laid down by soldier's hands, Who died for country and for Queen, …… That voice we ne'er shall hear again...That fought and fell beside his men...."

Returns are accepted within 14 days of receipt if the item is found to have been misdescribed and the purchaser may be liable for the return costs subject to reasons for return.
