Santiago Bonome - Glazed Fish on Glass Lamp
Superbly modelled ceramic fish on a green glass lamp base. The glass base being modelled as rising water to support the fish.
Santiago Rodríguez Bonome, a Spanish ceramist sculptor, born in 1901 in Santiago de Compostelaand died 1995 in France .
Born in Saint- Jacques de Compostela (Spain) in 1901, son of Evaristo Rodriguez Brea and Antonia Pérez Bonome , he started working at a very young age in the humble woodwork shop of his father. However, his dream was to be a sculptor so at the age of 13 years he started work in the religious imagery workshop of José Rivas, at the foot of the cathedral he so admired. At 18 he went to work for Enrique Carballido.
In 1924 , he moved to Madrid where he exhibited at the Gallego Centre , at the National Exhibition and La Coruna .
In 1925, at the Centre of Galicia in Buenos Aires he sold almost 30 of his works.
From 1926 to 1927 he exhibited in Barcelona at the Venice Biennale and in Monza (Italy) where he met Pirandello and Havana.
In 1929 he arrived in Paris where waiting Lucas Moreno and Mendez Casal. He exhibited in 1931 at Leblanc where Barbedienne became his editor.
In 1940 he married Simone Grottard with whom he had two daughters, Jacqueline and Helen.
WWII brought a profound change to his life so he turned to the manufacture of decorative objects made of iron , and then to ceramic art to support his family.
His works can be found in Tokyo, Philadelphia, France , Switzerland, Germany, Spain, UK in museums and in private collections.
His bronzes and sculpters have sold at Bonhams. Bonhams have recently estimated an auction value of £300 - £400 for this piece. I have set the price realistically at mid estimate.
