We are delighted to offer for sale this wonderfully characterised oil on canvas by the artist SMOL, who has signed the painting in the top right hand corner. The painting is a half length portrait of an elderly Orthodox Jewish Rabbi, wearing his striped prayer shawl or tallit and with his yarmulke or skull cap on his head. He has a long gray beard and his side curls or peyos are tucked behind his ears.

We think that the painting is of Eastern European origin, due to the placement of the signature at the top right, similar to some German paintings that we have handled, as well as the name of the artist. We are unsure whether the name of the artist is Smol or S. Mol, although there is no full stop to be seen, but the signature is rather indistinct.

We have, so far, been unable to find any information on any artist with either of these names, but if anyone recognises the artist, we would be most grateful if they could contact us. However, it is a masterful work by a very good hand.

The painting has been newly framed in a black frame with gold metallic insert, which suits it very well and it is ready to hang.
