Ruth Majorie Hopwell (1923-) Spring Cleaning
Spring Cleaning
Tempera on board
An inscription written on the back of the original frame has been removed and attached to the present frame, which reads Ruth Marjorie Hopwell, 12 St Michael's Avenue, Northampton, No1 "Spring Cleaning" £10.10.0, Tempera. Also a paper label from the Hertfordshire C.C. Education Commitee bears a hand written inscription of the artists name, date 0/46 and title of work.
Exhibited Royal Academy, London 1946, No. 934, purchased by Hertfordshire Education Committe.
Painter and teacher, Ruth Hopwell was initially educated in Northampton where she attended the Northampton School of Art, 1939-42, then the Royal College of Art, 1942-5, under Francis Helps, Gilbert Spencer and Percy Horton. She exhibited at the Royal Academy in London and the Royal Scottish Academy while teaching art at Howell's School, Denbigh, North Wales, 1945-7. She also exhibited at the Bradford City Art Gallery. The Hertfordshire Education Committe, where frequent buyers of her work.
After Ruth left Howell's school she went on to teach at the Manchester Municipal School, where she appears in a list of “Instructors and lecturers” as “Ruth M. Hopwell, A.R.C.A., (painting)”. She then appeared continuously from 1969-1970 in the schools prospectus, initially as an “Assistant” in the “School of Intermediate Studies” and then on the “Foundation” course. Unfortunatly the trail goes cold in 1970, that was the date the School of Art became part of Manchester Polytechnic and at that point the prospectus stoped listing the names of teaching staff. It is possible that she continued teaching after 1970 but there is no evidence either way.
I would like to thank Cathy Hughes, School Secretary, Howell's School, and Jeremy C. Parrett, Special Collections Archivist, Manchester Metropolitan University for their help in cataloguing the picture.
